I was going to talk about Marvel’s Avengers today, but lets save that difficult post for another day. Instead, let’s chat about the DC FanDome event this past weekend and its two big game reveals!
Fans have been waiting years to hear what’s next for the Arkhamverse and to learn what Rocksteady has been up to since its last release, Batman: Arkham Knight. The company has largely been silent, which has fueled the countless rumors, speculation, and supposed leaks. Three years later, fans finally have their answers not only from Rocksteady, but what direction WB Montreal is taking the Batman gaming franchise as well.
Rumors began to swirl about a Bat Family game and wouldn’t you know it, it actually panned out. However, one detail no one probably saw coming is that in this world, Batman has died. His death triggers one final message to be sent out to the Bat Family, giving them instructions on what to do next.
It’s also worth noting that this game is not actually in the Arkhamverse, so fans shouldn’t try and tie those games into this one. WB Montreal is doing their own thing in this case, which opens the doors to tons of new opportunities.
While fans will no doubt see some familiar gameplay elements such as the tech, gadgets, grounded combat, and open world traversal, Gotham Knights seems to place a greater emphasis on some RPG components like enemies levels. In addition, players have four characters to pick from including Nightwing, Robin, Red Hood, and Batgirl. While you can play the game solo, Gotham Knights introduced a true co-op experience as well.
Overall, I’m very intrigued and optimistic about this title. I’m a huge Batman: Arkham fan and while I know this game is intended to be different, it still has a bunch of elements that really remind me of what I liked about that series. I’m looking forward to learning more and…oh yeah!
The Talons! Gotham Knights seems to place an emphasis on the Court of Owls story line, one of my favorite comic book story arcs. It’ll be a little odd without Batman being at the center of this, but maybe Batman isn’t really dead after all? Conspiracies!
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
For those of you wondering what’s next for the Arkhamverse, Rocksteady has you covered! While their next game isn’t actually a Batman focused one, it at least takes place in the same universe as the Batman: Arkham titles.
I have to admit, it was a little jarring seeing the cinematic show off a bright and colorful city after multiple games taking place in the dirty and night covered streets of Gotham. We’re now in Metropolis, although it looks like it’s in rough shape especially considering a massive structure that hints at Brainiac.
The lengthy cinematic shows off the Suicide Squad in action and seems to focus on four core members: Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, King Shark, and Deadshot. As expected, Amanda Waller is behind the scenes giving the crew orders they’re reluctantly forced to follow. In this case, they’re hunting the Alpha target. After battling minor minions cleverly set to B.O.B. by Outkast, the group then finds their prime target: Superman.
While the crew is initially awestruck, it quickly becomes apparent that something isn’t right as Superman lasers the person he’s holding and his eyes are now glowing purple. And there is the main conceit of the game. Brainiac has seemingly taken control of the Justice League and is likely using them to take control. It’ll be up to this band of misfits to…cure? kill? capture?
Honestly, I can’t see DC being completely cool with having their iconic heroes killed in any capacity so I’m curious to see what’s really going to happen. Either way, I do like the idea of hunting these guys and having them be the boss characters we have to go up against. It’s an interesting twist on the typical superhero formula.
I’m definitely excited to see where Rocksteady is going with this. There’s really not much you can take away from the trailer as it’s all in CG and the game isn’t even out until 2022 so there’s still a long wait ahead.
What appealed to you guys? Let me know in the comments below!
