Diary of a Monster Hunter: Setting Off To A New World

The following is an excerpt from the travelling diary of Cortez, a new hunter from the Fifth Fleet to land in the New World and help establish the city of Astera.

Will he survive his first jump into this brand new world full of massive beasts? Stay tuned to find out as we check in with him over the course of the next few weeks.

Day 1: Landfall

I’ll be honest, I’ve never experienced anything quite like that. One minute we’re all laughing and celebrating on our excursion to this new land. I’ll be honest, I had been feeling a little overwhelmed at first, this being my first time out in the field and never having taken part on a previous journey before.

Things went from jovial to bad real quick as the airship was basically taken down by a massive creature. Thankfully, my newly assigned handler and I were able to make it out alive. Not without some bumps and bruises, of course. One minute we’re climbing the back of this massive creature and the next we’re flung off and landing in a dense jungle.

Thankfully, my partner had a map of where the ship was originally headed, so we headed off in that direction. (Seriously though, doesn’t she have a name? I mean, we’re supposed to be partners Diary, you’d think that’d be an important step, right?) Things were going smooth enough until we were come upon by this lizard looking creatures, I later found out were called Jagras. Thankfully, my hunting skills came in handy as I easily dispatched them. Unfortunately, that clearly triggered their mother, a massive Great Jagras, who proceeded to chase after us as well.

Diary, I won’t lie, I thought we were goners. Things were looking a bit grim, but we were saved by another hunter, the son of the Chief Hunter. We were thrilled he found us but as we were heading back to Astera, a massive T-Rex looking, creature, ambushed us. Thankfully, its attention turned to the Great Jagras, distracting it long enough for us to reach the city safely.

I’m beat. Time for a rest. Will write soon.

Day 4: Gearing Up and Starting the Adventure

It’s been a whirlwind couple of days since we arrived at Astera. Thankfully I managed to find my lost Palico cat, Maahes, when I arrived as well! (I found that name to be fairly ironic and somewhat funny considering it’s based on the old fearsome Egyptian lion-headed god of war and he’s a tiny but helpful cat) I think I literally slept for an entire day. There’s a lot to see and do here in Asrera, plus plenty of kind folks to get to know. The smithy and his crew at the workshop as well as the cute Palico cooks are not only friendly, but it’s clear that they love their jobs. Seriously, no matter how many things I order, they have boundless enthusiasm. That’s good because I’ll be speaking to them often, no doubt.

Monster Hunter: World Anjanath

I also met with the Chief Hunter, got a tour of the city and even picked out my first weapon. About time! I decided to go with the Insect Glaive. It’s certainly not conventional. It’s essentially a massive bladed staff, that is in sync with a bug called a Kinsect. I can fire out the bug to either attack or harvest an extract which provides me with buffs during combat. It’s a lot of fun, but can be pretty technical to use. Not only is it a fairly agile weapon, but I have access to these bugs called Kinsects which can provide buffs if applied correctly. I’m pretty bad about managing them, but I’m learning!

Let’s be honest here though, I mainly picked this weapon for the sweet, sweet aerial moves I can now pull off. Being able to jump on and ride monsters is always thrilling.

With all that business out of the way, I was sent on my first assignment to cull the growing numbers of jagras in the forests outside Astera. These little guys weren’t much of a threat. Same goes for the Kestodon herds as well. Things got a little more interesting when a Great Jagras showed up, however.

Armed with new gear, I got to work on my new target. The fight was long, and I was forced to chase him down on more than one occasion. The thing even ate a nearby kestodon, which gave him a massive belly. Overall, I didn’t find the beast overly challenging, though it was a lot of fun. Let’s be honest here Diary, I’m sure there are bigger creatures out there, but taking on what is basically a massive iguana was still pretty epic. Plus, I was able to harvest materials from it to craft this great looking set of bone armor. Diary, I think I’m getting a little addicted to this crafting process.

Apparently, there’s something called a Pukei-Pukei causing trouble. Will have to investigate that shortly…

Well, that’s all for now. Will write soon.

    • Thanks so much, I’m thrilled to hear it! I wanted to do an impressions post on Monster Hunter World, especially since I’ve never played the series before. When I thought about it, the idea of doing a traditional write up wasn’t super appealing, so I was trying to think of different ways to approach it.

Then it hit me. Styling it like a diary, where the hunter recapped his day just made so much sense. I tried to not only keep it creative, but also mix in subtle insight into the game from my point of view as well.

Really glad you and others are digging it.
