The moment many fighting game fans were waiting for finally happened this past weekend as Fighter Pack 3 was revealed for Injustice 2, putting to rest the speculation and rumors regarding the next wave of fighters. NetherRealm previously revealed Atom was coming, and many people managed to figure out that one of the other silhouettes looked somewhat like June Moon aka Enchantress. The question revolved around the third shadow. Some people believed it was Spawn, while others thought those broad shoulders belonged to a character like Azrael.
Adding fuel to the fire was none other than the trolling master himself Ed Boon. Days before the announcement, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat posted this random Tweet:
Obviously, considering that Fighter Packs 1 and 2 both added Sub Zero and Raiden to the game, people began immediately speculating that Mileena would be the third. Cut to the trailer and fans got quick confirmations of Atom and Enchantress. Where things got interesting is when a familiar sai hit the ground between the two fighters. Thinking Mileena was confirmed, the trailer shifted to a figure walking towards the duo, speaking in a man’s voice. Turns out, it was these guys. The crowd lost their minds.
They did it. They actually did it. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Way to troll us all, Ed.
Interestingly enough, not everyone seemed to be thrilled with the reveal. While people were disappointed that some of their favorites didn’t make it like Constantine or Beast Boy, I did see comments that people were mad that a game based around comic book characters got another guest character. Believe it or not, the Turtles are a much better fit than most realize.
Before they became a hit TV and movie franchise, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started out as a comic book franchise for Mirage Studios. So, technically speaking, Fighter Pack 3 is the first DLC pack with all comic book characters. Not only that, the Turtles have recently teamed up with Batman in a pretty successful comic series.
So the interesting twist here is that the Turtles represent four characters. My initial question is how this will actually work. Is it going to be like Sub Zero and his colors for Reptile, Scorpion, etc? I’ll be honest, that’ll be a bit disappointing considering how different each Turtle is, so being able to change/customize them through gear and shaders wouldn’t capture that spirit.
So how would this work then? Maybe players can pick which turtle to play as like they select the character image from the select screen and then the four options appear. Maybe they’re going to handle this through the premier skin system, where players get access to them for free (or after purchasing the Turtle character pack).
Clearly, the Turtles will be the last release in this pack so we’ll have a bit longer to wait before we get those answers.
