Gamer Crash Predicts E3 2017: Nintendo

Miss any of my previous prediction posts? Catch up here: Microsoft; Sony; Third Party Games.

With E3 now right around the corner, my final prediction post centers around the final member of the “big three” and also the company having a rebirth of sorts at the moment: Nintendo.

After a really tough last generation with the WiiU, Nintendo has seemingly struck gold once again as the Switch has proven to be a hit with consumers. Thanks to a strong launch with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this E3 is all about finding a way to keep that momentum going.

I fully expect Nintendo to have a number of new surprises at the show this year, mainly because the current Switch release cycle is pretty bare. There’s no way Nintendo is leaving it like that, potentially to squander all of this new found momentum. Super Mario Odyssey is still a long ways off, so how can Nintendo keep this resurgence going until Mario once again arrives?

Here’s what I’m thinking.

The Sure Bets

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first. We know Nintendo is going to discuss the following three games at great length considering they’re major first party exclusives. Expect trailers and gameplay galore. Nothing more needs to be said about them.

  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Splatoon 2
  • ARMS

Pokemon is almost also a given here. While the easy call would be to say it’ll be a new 3DS title, I’m going to say Switch owners will also be getting their Pokemon fix later this year as well. Could that mean a Stadium style fighting game, a traditional Pokemon RPG experience, or maybe that MMO style experience people have been begging for all these years.

Considering how popular the Fire Emblem franchise has become thanks to recent 3DS titles and now a mobile spin off, I’m expecting more news from Nintendo on the future of this series. My money is on a Switch version this time around however. Whether playing it at home while docked or out on the go, there’s no doubt that this franchise fits the new system like a glove.

The 50/50s

Metroid. Nintendo, please. I stand by my promise to run out and by a Switch if you announce a new entry. Please Nintendo. make my day. Bring Samus back!

One of Nintendo’s most popular franchises, Smash Bros, is sure to make some sort of appearance on the Switch, mainly because the console already appears to have more momentum than the WiiU ever did. I can’t say for sure if this will be a remastered version of the WiiU title similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or perhaps a brand new game entirely. Considering the length of time it takes to create a new Smash game, my money is on a remastered, Game of the Year package.

Personally, I’m also expecting to see some sort of motion control focused game, something that tries to really sell the hardware in a way that Wii Sports did back on the Wii. I don’t think 1-2 Switch is really going to cut it, so a true and much fuller mini-game experience probably isn’t out of the question.

Long shots and Wish Lists

It may still be too far off, but perhaps we might get a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC tease? I’d love to see some hints or news regarding that story based DLC pack. Is it content focused on a non-Link protagonist like Zelda?

I’d love to see Nintendo dive into their massive chest of rarely used IPs as well. Why not develop a new F-Zero? Will Donkey Kong be coming back in a stand alone game any time soon? Also, how many Mario parties is too many?

The most recent Star Fox kinda flopped, which makes me think Nintendo isn’t interested in revisiting that franchise anytime soon, but I’d love to see another crack at it, perhaps with less of a focus on motion controls.

Finally, I’m also hoping Nintendo will reveal the existence of an SNES Mini as well. While I don’t think it’ll happen, it’d be nice to get confirmation that they fixed the production issues experienced with the NES Mini. Hey, one can dream, right?

I’m dying for a new Metroid. As much as I’d love to see a reveal, I don’t think it’ll happen. Nintendo’s pretty focused on Arms, Splatoon and Mario at the moment, but it would be nice.

    • I’m right there with you man, I’m waiting for the day Samus returns! I don’t know, I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing something in a few weeks, perhaps by Retro Studios or someone else.

Above all, I just hope the game, whenever it does arrive, is good.
