Community is a term which gets thrown around a lot but in my time blogging here, it’s quickly become one of the most important aspects. The wordpress community has been really wonderful to me over these years and for that I’m grateful. I’ve met a lot of great people through my site, which then allowed me to follow other great writers as well. This past week, I was presented with the Blogger Recognition Award from Ashley over at Robo♥beat, so make sure to go visit her blog for more awesome games talk.
So what is this all about? Glad you asked! Take a look below:
For those unaware or curious, here are the three big rules:
1. Give two pieces of advice, which I’m providing specific to blogging below.
2. Give some insight into how your blog started
3. Nominate other bloggers, which you’ll also find below.
My Writing Advice
1. Be Yourself
When I first started, my mentality was that I had to be like the big gaming sites, updating daily with fresh content. Even if there wasn’t something to write about, I’d find something just to post.
Yeah, I’m sorry, that’s not the way to do it in my opinion. Not only did that cause the content’s quality to drop a bit due to the fact that I was writing about things that I didn’t particularly care about, but it also drained me. Gamer Crash has always been a site run and managed by just me so keeping to a schedule like that is a quick way to burning yourself out.
So my advice here is to write about what you care about, regardless of keeping to a schedule. Not only will the posts be stronger because you actually care about the material, but you won’t burn yourself out.
2. Community Is Key
As I’ve come to find out over these five years, one person can only do so much. You may write the best posts, have the shiniest images, and the catchiest titles, but without a community, the site will never live up to it’s full potential.
Through Gamer Crash, I’ve met so many great and wonderful people, it’s something I never intended or expected after kicking this site off in 2010. In fact, I didn’t realize how key a community can be. It may sound sappy, but seeing people reading, liking, commenting, and generally caring about the stuff I’ve created really does make you feel good. To help foster that further, make sure to get out there to read and participate on other blogs as well.
History of Gamer Crash
It’s kind of odd how these things start at times. Back in school, I never considered myself a writer. Sure I did well in writing and English classes, but I never expected to be here, where I am now. I was the guy that everyone turned to for information on games, whether it was what was coming out or general information on a specific game. I liked that.
It’s because of that fact that I started this site back in 2010. Yes, it’s been that long. Crazy how fast time flies.
I viewed Gamer Crash as a place where people could come to hang out for a while (hence the “crash” aspect of the name), while also serving as a spot for me to write down my ideas, thoughts and opinions. Over the years the site has evolved a few times but it has always been an outlet for me and has allowed me to stay in touch with all of you.
So thank you to each and every one of you who stops/has stopped by to read my stuff. Whether it’s your first or 100th time.
There’s a ton of great sites out there so whittling the list down to just three was very difficult. Seriously though, go check these guys out, good stuff from all of them. Once again, thanks to Ashley from Robo♥beat for nominating me.
