The Odd Couple: Google Maps Meets Destiny

As many of you are very much aware, we’re mere days away from the release of Destiny, Activision and Bungie’s hugely anticipated shooter. What I didn’t expect to see in the week leading up to the game’s release is a partnership between Google and Bungie in which people can use their Google Maps technology to fully explore the different planets in the game.

Known as Planet View, players will be able to use this program to fully explore and tour many of the games environments on Mars, Venus, and the Moon. This program also gives you major insights into some of the enemies you’ll face, game mechanics, allows you to discover some secrets in the game, and even some real facts about these celestial bodies as well. If you’re thorough enough, it will also offer up an item for use in the main game if you fully explore all the environments. And yes, there is a moon wizard for those of you wondering.

On the surface, this is a really odd pairing, and one that I kind of scoffed at when I first heard about it. Being curious however, I gave it a shot and found that when you actually use it, it’s pretty cool. There’s a ton of different points to explore on each planet and you can fully move the camera around to explore the zone you’re looking at. If you want to check this out yourself, make sure to visit DestinyPlanetView.com. See you in the stars next Tuesday!
