Well, it’s time of the year again when the industry gets a bit…silly shall we say. April 1st or April Fools as most people know it as, is a day where the gaming industry kicks it’s feet up and sets out to put out some of the best gags and false news stories out there. Sometimes their plans backfire though and what they put out as a joke becomes something the people actually want. We can look to Volition and their Ostrich Hammer prank before Red Faction Guerrilla released for a good example of that.
There seemed to be a ton of entries this year and I won’t lie, I couldn’t grab everything because, hey, I’m just one guy over here running the show. While not every post was a sure fire winner, some companies use April 1st to hide actual announcements such as last year’s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon announcement. Did we get any more this year? Yes, certainly looks like it.
If you’re new to the site (welcome!), what I do around this time of year is to round up some of the best jokes and gags from the day that was. So prepare to laugh, cry, or cover your eyes in shame. Here are the top pranks from the day of fools.
Stand By for Prime
A Titanfall and Transformers DLC pack? Unfortunately, this one appears as just a prank. Personally, I’d love to see this happen but I’m sure it’s a licensing nightmare, not to mention EA and the former Infinity Ward guys would need to work with Activision. Yeah, that’s never happening.

Herald of the Stars
Never one to miss out on April Fools, Blizzard was back at it very early this year. Their first of three posts centered around the last game in the Starcraft II series. Focuses on the Protoss race, Herald of the Stars puts players in the shoes of Artanis, the Hierarch of the sage Templar. The post starts out innocently enough but as you keep reading, the April Fools-ness starts to seep through. Dance Editor? Twitch viewer participation? Fools indeed.

Blizzard Enters The Fighting Game Scene
Ever wonder what it would be like to have your favorite Blizzard characters go head to head in a fighting game? Well, keep wondering because this isn’t it. If you’re interested in the obscure and unpopular Blizzard creations then this fighter is for you. I’m just thrilled that Wirt finally has an opportunity to shine….with his leg.

Blizzard’s final assault today is a parody of Flappy Bird. You know, that mobile game that people went ape over only to have the creator take it down? Blizzard’s take on this involves the Reaper of Death himself, Malthael, navigating through Pandemonium ruins while collecting souls and destroying nephalem. With how popular Flappy Bird was, I’d think this game would have a huge audience as well.

Law Enforcement Gets A Helping Hand
Law Enforcement too easy when you’re out on a heist with your buddies? Mirror shields, titans, and cloaked teleporting enemies all await you in this new law enforcement pack for PayDay 2. While wildly overpowered, I’m sure there’s an audience out there for this…somewhere.

Rappy Bird Takes Flight
Yup, another Flappy Bird parody. Except this one you can play and it looks like it was ripped from the first Sonic game from the Sega Genesis days.

Orcksmith – Lords of Metal
A fan of metal? A fan of Orks? Well…yeah, there’s this then! Coming to a store near you never.

MoCap Troubles For The Witcher
By: CD Projekt Red
Definitely one of my favorites today, make sure you watch this one all the way through. It’ll look harmless enough at first. Channeling rage and energy can sometimes do wonders…or cause significant structural damage.

Project Spark Goes Off The Grid
By: Team Dakota
Game consoles are so last year. If you’re looking for the “home edition” then Team Dakota wants you to check out their board game version of Project Spark. Why create things digitally when you can use traditional pen and paper mechanics.

By: Wayforward Technologies
With all this talk lately with VR headsets like Oculus and Project Morpheus, Wayforward wants to get in on the discussion. Instead of providing realistic looking graphics and environments, what would you say to a headset that de-makes your surroundings into a pixelated, retro style.

Nuclear Throne Goes First Person
Calling their look outdated, Vlambeer has taken it upon themselves to convert their top down roguelike into a first person shooter. What’s funny about this is that this isn’t a true joke. Just for kicks, Rami and his team really did convert the game. You can download the beta client in the below link if you want to experience Nuclear Throne in a different light.

Destiny’s Super Collector’s Edition
If you’ve ever said to yourself: “Self, I’d love to visit Mars”, then Bungie has your answer. Provided you have a small fortune to burn through. All of it can be yours when Destiny launches later this year for the reasonable price of $7,000,000.00. As is the tagline: “Don’t just play the game – live the adventure!”

This Year’s Truth. Skullgirls New Character
By: Lab Zero
Probably riding the popular sentiment regarding the final character reveal for Capcom’s upcoming Ultra Street Fighter IV, Lab Zero decided to add a clone character for their own fighter, Skullgirls. Embracing the theme of palette swaps and clones, the team has actually added Fukua for players to enjoy.

Octodads: Dadlier Catch
By: Young Horses
Ever find yourself wondering what having multiple cephalopods disguised as father figures among society would be like? So has developer Young Horses as they introduce a multiplayer mode for their quirky title, Octodad: Dadliest Catch. For the record, chaos. Chaos is what you can expect.

Varric Chest Toupee and Garrus Vakarian Body Pillow
What better way to show your Dragon Age pride then by purchasing a large patch of chest hair and a gold chain to look like everyone’s favorite surface dwarf. Can’t get to sleep due to pesky reapers in your closet? Grab a Garrus Vakarian body pillow and let him do the straight shooting for you.
What’s even better about these false listings is that you can’t even purchase it if you wanted to. The Add to Cart button constantly moves away from your mouse pointer. I’m sure there’s someone out there that will give it the old college try though. Remember folks, these are minutes you can never have back.

The GRID series is finally expanding to the one place I think most people have been begging for: trains. I think the following sums it up nicely:
“Station Master mode will result in unforgettable multiplayer experiences. As you race your train along the 1,337 miles of track you’ll have to contend with members of the opposing team switching points at will. Survive the sudden track changes and make it to your destination on time.”

Tim Burton Meets Killzone
By: Guerrilla Games
I have to admit, this one is pretty cool. Seeing the Killzone universe twisted into a Tim Burton style movie is something I think no one has ever considered. Especially one with Helena Bonham-Carter and Johnny Depp. But, here we are.
