Season One of Killer Instinct Ends on April 9 With Fulgore and Major News

Fulgore fans, you’re day has come as Microsoft and Double Helix released the final trailer for Season One of Killer Instinct featuring everyone’s favorite murder cyborg, Fulgore. I won’t spoil anything except to say: Lasers.

Not only will Fulgore be available on April 9, but he’s coming packed with more content and requested features including a traditional Arcade mode, online lobbies, and spectator mode. Here’s the reveal trailer for a better look:

And then there’s the news about Double Helix being purchased by Amazon to work on their games label last month. Many questions arose from that including the big one: who would take over development on Killer Instinct and Season 2? Yesterday’s update finally gave us those answers. Going forward Iron Galaxy Studios will be taking the reigns while being supported by the large Microsoft Game Studios team that helped work on Season 1 with Double Helix. Don’t worry, the same Hex Engine will be used for Season 2 as well so realistically, you shouldn’t notice a hiccup at all.

So just who is Iron Galaxy Studios?

They’re relatively new on the scene having been founded back in 2008 in Chicago, Illinois. Since their founding, they’ve taken on a lot of consulting and development support type of roles, but more recently have been the ones to resurrect old Capcom fighting games for the newer systems like Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online, Marvel vs Capcom Origins, and Darkstalkers Resurrection. As for original titles, they’ve released 2011’s The Wreckateer on XBLA and more recently the parody fighting game, Divekick. You can definitely make the argument that these guys know what they’re doing with fighting games which should make them feel right at home with KI.

If you want to know more on these guys, definitely have a look at this interview from Polygon as they talk to IG’s CEO, Dave Lang, about getting that call from Microsoft and his plans for Killer Instinct going forward. It’s fascinating stuff and for me at least, really solidifies them as a great choice for this fighting franchise. I’m looking forward to see what they can do with Season 2.
