From Rumor to Fact – New Details on Assassin’s Creed Unity

I tend to shy away from posting rumors, but I couldn’t help myself with this one.

Last week, Kotaku posted a couple of leaked screenshots of the next Assassin’s Creed game. According to reports, two versions are being worked on probably in a similar fashion to what happened to Splinter Cell Double Agent when the new consoles hit back then.

What no one expected was for Ubisoft to actually confirm the leaks and rumors a couple days later rather than take a typical publisher route to deny everything. As reported, the next game in the franchise will be Assassin’s Creed Unity and has been confirmed to be in development for PC and next generation consoles. What about you current/old gen console owners? Keep reading…

Now on the my favorite part. If you’ve been reading my site for a while, you may be aware of my “Speculation” posts from a while back where I list out locations and time periods I’d love to see upcoming AC games go. A standard entry for me is always revolutionary France. Based on the reports and now teaser trailer for Unity, this new game is set during this time with a new protagonist named “Arno” draped in dark blue assassin’s garb complete with a rapier and pistol. I’d expect Ubisoft go really embrace the history aspect in this one considering that France is ripe with culture and historical landmarks like the Notre Dame and Bastille to name a few. Here’s the teaser:

What’s interesting here is that the other aspect to the rumor, Assassin’s Creed “Comet” was not mentioned at all. If the rumors are true, “Comet” will be the version for people still running Xbox 360 and PS3. At least this way people won’t be able to claim that developing across multiple consoles held the “next-gen” versions back. Another aspect I’m curious to here is if Unity and/or Comet is one of the projects that Splinter Cell developer, Ubisoft Toronto is working on. They’re rumored to be working on multiple projects at the studio.

While Black Flag really was able to refresh the series for me, is Ubisoft treading on dangerous grounds now with so many Assassin’s games constantly hitting? What do you think? Excited to explore France and rub shoulders with famous figures like Robespierre, Napoleon, and Louis XVI?

I haven’y played Black Flag, but I think it looked good.
The problem I’ve always had with AC, is that I just got a bit bored of it. I don’t really know why either…
I’m still thinking of getting Black Flag when its a bit cheaper.

      Was meant to also say.
I hope this game mixes it up a bit. I think they are living on thin ice with the amount of AC games. Black Flag rebooted them a bit. But they are milking it a bit now.

      • I will say that the campaign gameplay missions in Black Flag needed some variety. Like 85% of the story missions felt the same: trail or eavesdrop.

Now, I can understand why they would do that considering you’re a stealthy assassin but I felt like it was used as a crutch. The side content and everything about the game was great though.

Also, those missions are not fun whatsoever.

I really hope they get away from relying so heavily on eavesdrop and trail based missions in Unity.
