If you’re a fan of strategy games, you may want to keep reading.
Soren Johnson, lead designer on Civilization IV is no longer at Firaxis and has opened up a brand new studio called Mohawk Games. He’s joined by Dorian Newcomb who served as Art Director on Civilization V and Brad Wardell, designer on the Galactic Civilizations series. Mohawk is utilizing the Nitrous Engine, created by Oxide Games and is being financed by Stardock who is also serving as publisher for the Baltimore, MD startup.
What’s interesting to see is that Mohawk believes strongly in community development and feedback to help improve their products over time. They’ll be looking to interact directly with their community and take advantage of alternative funding methods like crowdfunding and early access programs. Ultimately, they’re looking to create a system where fans can support them and hold them accountable as well. You can read more about their goals and ideas on their official blog here.
While we don’t currently know what their first project is outside of the codename “Mars”, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Mohawk is more than likely working on a new strategy title. I mean, look at the pedigree of the studio and you’ll see that it makes sense. Either way, I’m looking forward to what the team has cooking up as there’s already a lot of talent there. Hopefully the wait isn’t too long.
