It’s not everyday that I shine a light over on a Kickstarter project. In fact this my be my second time doing so, but I guess it’s fair to say that when I do, the project has caught my attention in some way. I’ve been pretty pumped for Shovel Knight ever since hearing about it a few months ago. It looks to combine many things I love from retro style (NES-era) gaming with nods to games like Castlevania and Mega Man. Couple all of that with 8-bit graphics and a very catchy chiptune soundtrack and you have my attention.
For those who don’t know, Shovel Knight is the project by Yacht Club Games, developers formerly of WayForward Technologies. Shovel Knight is their first project and is a 2D retro inspired action platformer reminiscent of games like Mega Man as it to has a colorful cast of bosses to take down.
Speaking of Mega Man, Shovel Knight is about to get an infusion of actual Mega Man DNA as Manami Matsumae as signed on to create and write two songs for the platformer. Matsumae created the soundtrack to Mega Man 1, Nitro Man’s stage, and she’s even responsible for the original sound effects like Mega Man dying and the boss doors opening and closing. To those of you that have played the series, you’ll know just how memorable that stuff is. She joins the main composer, Jake “Virt” Kaufman, to make up what will no doubt be a very catchy and memorable soundtrack.
Shovel Knight only has a few days to go and while it has already surpassed it’s goal, why not stop by, check it out, and if you like what you see, toss some money their way?
