Sony Santa Monica Changing Controversial Trophy In God of War Ascension

Kratos makes his return today on the Playstation 3 and what’s God of War without a little controversy?  With reviews hitting last week, the big news to come out of them was a scene where the main character, Kratos, basically curb stomps one of the Furies (a female human looking creature) into the ground and then impales her on a nearby spike fence.  After which, a trophy appears with the name “Bros Before Hoes”.  It seems to have had a negative affect on many reviewers also spurring a controversy among gamers across the globe.

After reading all of the feedback and reviews, Sony Santa Monica has decided to alter the trophy name to “Bros Before Foes”.  A patch should be prompted when the game is entered into the system to amend the trophy name.

While I do think the trophy name is in poor taste, I don’t think I feel quite the same about the scene in question.  I mean, you know what you’re getting with God of War which is already well-known far and wide for its violence and blood.  The main character basically rips apart all sorts of men, women, and monsters throughout the series so the shock value is kind of expected.  I’ve seen the scene in question and while it does rank up there in some of the most violent scenes, for me, it’s nowhere near some of the crazier moments like gouging out Poseidon’s eyes from first person perspective or watching Kratos as he strains and struggles to rip the head off of a living person with his bare hands.  That scene for me is easily number one and still makes me cringe just thinking about it.

What are your thoughts?  Happy with the change or are you just turned off from the experience?

I like Adam Sessler, and have always enjoyed his reviews even when I don’t agree with them, but I really have to laugh at any reviewer who complained about this trophy the way he did and the way the Polygon guy did.

I just can’t believe anyone could be so upset over the name of a trophy that it would ruin the story for them and make them want to quit playing the game. Ripping heads off and playing one of the most violent games around is all well and good, but don’t you dare call a creature that resembles a woman (although not human) a “ho” on a trophy. I just don’t see the logic in that.

I’m disappointed Sony caved on the issue and renamed it.

I have to admit, after reading the reviews, my mind began trying to create the scene to justify what they were saying. After actually watching the scene in question, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I believed it was. As I mentioned, yeah it’s violent, but I wouldn’t rank it in the top 5. But it’s God of War, this high level of violence should be expected going in.

As for the renaming aspect, I guess they viewed it as something to not put up a fight over.
