Here’s a question for you. What do you get when you combine the action figures and portals from Activision-Blizzard’s popular game, Skylanders, with the open freedom to build of Minecraft and the Create, Share, and Play of LittleBigPlanet? If all goes according to plan, you have the recipe for Disney Infinity. Yesterday, the house of mouse made this rumored project official with Avalanche Software at the development helm and it’s looking to make a giant splash in the games industry with this title in June.
Essentially, it takes the core concept of figures and placing them on a pedestal where they are “downloaded” into the game. Each character has a specific playset based on their setting, so with Jack Sparrow, expect to be on the Black Pearl in a Pirates of the Caribbean motif. At launch, Disney is planning about 20 characters mostly from Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters University, and The Incredibles. Other characters will follow shortly after as the platform evolves and grows. There’s even talk of Marvel and Star Wars being added eventually.
Here’s where the game takes an interesting turn: Toybox mode. Think of what Avalanche did with Toy Story 3 and then times that by one thousand. It’s in here that you can take these characters and have them interact, breaking them out of their specific worlds so to speak. There are no rules, do what you want, create what you want, and then share it with the world. This mode takes inspiration from both Minecraft and LittleBigPlanet as it will allow the player to create all sorts of things using the tutorials and level building mode which also includes a “logic editor” for basic programming. This can lead to various game types such as top down shooters, sidescrollers, racing games, and all sorts of stuff. The sky seems to be the limit in the ToyBox.
Frankly, I’m shocked that no one has yet jumped on the Skylanders bandwagon seeing as how much money that IP brings in for Activision. It’s pretty genius if you thinking about it as it really combines two things that kids can’t get enough of: Action Figures and Games. Now, if you take that concept and add in the huge array of Disney properties, you have the potential here for something absolutely huge, maybe even bigger than Skylanders. I mean, you’re looking at Pixar, Marvel, traditional Disney characters and even Star Wars now. Hey, maybe even the Hall of Presidents, right guys? Guys?
This ambitious project is set to hit in June for almost every platform available: Xbox 360, PS3, PC, WiiU, Wii, and 3DS.
