Need something a bit more competitive instead of the 4 player co-op in Insomniac’s upcoming multiplatform game Fuse? Well, Insomniac’s CEO, Ted Price revealed a brand new mode on G4’s X-Play earlier this week called Echelon. Before we begin, yes, it is a Horde style mode like we see from most shooters these days. Echelon mode pits players against 12 waves of increasingly difficult enemies. Each wave is randomized but you’re always guaranteed at least 2 boss battles. Sure, that’s all well and good, but why should you care? So, what makes it stand out from the rest?
Here’s where the “co-opetitive” element comes in. While the main goal of this mode will require teamwork to reach the end, Fuse will also throw things at you like money and experience which are up for grabs. Collect enough cash and you’ll be able to purchase and upgrade abilities. This progress carries over through all game modes so you can see why players are going to start battling each other for them.
From what it sounds like, this friendly competition, the character interaction, and being able to chain together streaks and combos bring a breath of fresh air to the quickly stagnating mode. We’ll have to wait and see once Fuse releases next year for PS3 and Xbox 360.
