Originally rumored to be Title Fight, Sony has finally come out and admitted that this one is in development over at SuperBot Entertainment. Officially titled Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, the game will pit many of your favorite Sony characters in a fight against one another.
Before we go any further I do need to address the elephant in the room. Yes, Sony took major influence from a certain Nintendo fighter beginning with ‘Smash’ and ending in ‘Bros’. There’s a lot here that’ll remind you of Smash Bros including the fast paced action, characters ripped from various Playstation titles, and the ability to fling characters off the map. Still, you may want to wait before you write this game off as a straight up copycat.
So let’s get the basics out of the way. You’ll be playing various Playstation characters in familiar Playstation game maps. Can’t deny the power of nostalgia. It’s a 3D brawler on a 2D plane and currently only 6 fighters have been revealed with many more sure to follow as we get closer to release. I’d be shocked if Nathan Drake and Cole MacGrath were missing. Sony even hinted at 2nd and 3rd party characters getting involved as well. As of right now, you’ll be able to use Kratos, PaRappa the Rappa, Sweet Tooth, Sly Cooper, Fat Princess, and Coloniel Radec. Each plays very differently relying on different abilities like Coloniel Radec’s trusty sniper rifle, to Sly Cooper’s power to go invisible.
During the frenetic and crazy matches, you’ll be collecting things called “Action Points” which build a meter and allow you to unleash special attacks. Depending on how many you’ve collected, you’ll unlock an even more powerful attack. Think of it like unleashing a special attack from a Marvel Vs game.
The cool thing is that the team at SuperBot was hand-picked by Sony. Each team member at SuperBot has talent taken all over the place such as guys that worked on games like UFC Undisputed, Mortal Kombat, and many other fighting games. You can kind of say that they’ve been purposely built to deliver a solid fighting game experience.
While we don’t have too many details on the game outside of the 6 characters and handful of stages, we do know that the game will have a crazy number of options including local and online with up to 4 players. For those of you who just want to unleash chaos by yourself, a single player campaign has been promised. I’m hearing a holiday release time frame, but outside of that, no concrete details. With E3 quickly approaching, I’d be surprised if we didn’t learn more. I don’t know about you, but another Smash Bros style game is a welcome sight to me.
