So Nintendo pulled a curveball yesterday when they released their first Nintendo Direct for 2014 in the afternoon after typically releasing them in the morning so you’d be forgiven if you missed yesterday’s announcements. Hey, that’s why I’m here right?
I have to admit, Nintendo came out with a bang touching on many of their most anticipated titles including Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros, Bayonetta 2, and a few more. They dropped a heap of new trailers, new information, and even a few release dates.
Below I’ve collected all of the major announcements for you to enjoy. Please note that many of the announcements came with a corresponding trailer. While they’re not here, definitely tune back in tomorrow because I’ll have them all in the Saturday Video Round Up. It’s going to be a great one so definitely come back and check it out.
Without further adieu, here’s what you missed yesterday…well, after the jump.
New Challenger Approaches for Super Smash Bros
While we’ve been getting a number of familiar faces, Nintendo finally announced the addition of Little Mac as a playable combatant for the first time. Many of you will recognize him from the Punch Out! franchise.
3DS Game Round Up!
A number of 3DS titles were shown off and some even given release dates!
Hitting stores on May 2, Kirby’s Triple Deluxe is a brand new platformer using the same engine as 2011’s Kirby’s Return to Dream Land.
Mario Golf: World Tour is also hitting retail on May 2 featuring the ability to create and customize your Mii character with various stat boosting items, a training area to hone your skills, and both real-time and asynchronous multiplayer.
Pokemon Battle Trozei puts a Bejeweled type of spin on the franchise as players work to match three Pokemon faces as they battle and capture over 700 Pokemon spanning the entire franchise so far. The game will be available on March 20 in North America.
Yoshi’s New Island also got a new trailer and gave me nostalgic chills seeing gameplay and a visual style reminiscent of my favorite Mario game: Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Looks like Yoshi can now throw massive eggs destroying the environment and also becoming super powered as well. You can pick this up on March 14.
The new Professor Layton game (the Azran Legacy) was given the new trailer treatment as well and represents the final game in the second Layton trilogy. February 28 is when you can get to solving with the good professor!
Mario Kart 8 Getting An Extra Dose of Koopa
For those of you who are fans of the kart racing genre, you’ll be happy to know that Mario Kart 8 now has a release date of May 30. Not only that, Nintendo also confirmed that all seven koopa kids: Iggy, Larry, Morton, Wendy, Ludwig, Lemmy, and Roy.
NES Remix 2 Announced
Following the well received downloadable title a few months back, Nintendo has announced a sequel which will be hitting sometime in April. Classic games set to be remixed are Metroid, Super Mario Bros 3, Kirby’s Adventure, Ice Hockey, and Punch-Out!! to name a few. The game will also come with Super Luigi Bros, a standalone game and a remix of the original NES game. In this one, Luigi is the star and players will be moving from right to left in a mirrored version of the classic game.
Xenoblade Chronicles successor, X, detailed
Monolith Soft showed off a bit more of their Sci-Fi RPG, X, in an all new trailer. It’s also been confirmed that the game borrows the combat system from Xenoblade Chronicles only tweaked and polished a bit more. I have no idea if this is a good thing having never played Xenoblade Chronicles so I’ll leave that up to all of you who have.
WiiU Virtual Console Getting A Boost
Starting in April, Game Boy Advance titles will begin to be available for purchase including Metroid Fusion and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga with additional games to be released every month.
Bayonetta 2 Gets New Trailer Treatment
The new trailer details part of the game’s story, apparently with a war between two clans originating about 500 years prior to the events in the first game between the Umbra Witches and Lumen Sages. The title is still pegged for a 2014 release, but no specific dates have yet been announced.
