So if you’ve been following the rollercoaster ride of GSC Game World and their follow up PC title, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 then I’m afraid after a long battle, things have fallen apart for this developer. It was confirmed yesterday that the anticipated sequel has been cancelled and the studio itself shut down.
I know it may be hard to believe but there is a silver lining in all of this news. The former members of GSC have already gone ahead and created a new development studio called Vostok Games and are hard at work on their next project. They were unable to reach an agreement with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. brand rights holder so the gang at Vostok forged ahead without it.
From what they’ve already mentioned however, it doesn’t seem like you’ll need to worry about never seeing another S.T.A.L.K.E.R. style game from the newly formed studio. Currently, Vostok is hard at work on a MMOFPS game for the PC which will also be free to play. The game’s working title is Survarium and they view it as the next evolution in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. Interestingly enough they’ve been working on this idea for the past 10 year or so and by forming a new independent studio, they finally found time to flesh it out into a full-fledged game. What we do know about the game is that it’ll be a game about survival in a post apocalyptic world. Chernobyl seems to once again be at the heart of the game but players will also be able to explore beyond it’s gates as well.
I’m glad things worked out in the end for GSC as it’s not everyday you hear news about a studio closing, the team members forming a new studio and working on a dream project all in the same timeline. One things for sure, I can’t wait to hear more about this title and I wish the gang over at Vostok all the best.
